The university community includes nearly 20,000 faculty and staff, more than half a million alumni, and over 200 research centers and institutes. The annual operating budget is USD 2.7 billion.ChallengeWith virtual machines (VMs) growing at an average six percent per month, IU’s University Information Technology Services (UITS) department wanted to refresh its virtualized infrastructure to obtain higher performance and capacity. UITS also needed outstanding stability to move mission-critical databases, services, and applications off costly proprietary platforms and into a unified cloud.SolutionUITS committed to what its leaders call “ruthless standardization.” It refreshed virtually all the university’s server infrastructure and now runs approximately 1,600 VMs on an internal cloud of 65 Dell PowerEdge* R810 servers with the Intel® Xeon® processor 7560 and VMware vSphere* 4 Enterprise Plus. Accomplished in two months, the transition was invisible to users.
