Intel and the Environment: Responsible Operations

Doing Our Part for the Environment

Our Policies and Practices for Conserving Resources

At Intel, we continually strive to improve our operations and minimize our impact on the environment. We’ve been the largest voluntary producer of green power in the U.S. (in 2008, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), and our commitment continues to grow. Our green power purchases in 2011 accounted for 85 percent of our U.S. electricity use, up from 50 percent in 2008.

In our view, a commitment to sustainability requires a broad portfolio of efforts. To this end, we vigilantly pursue new ways to reduce emissions and improve energy management through conservation, renewable energy, efficient building design, and other efforts.

Our commitment to the health and well-being of the planet influences
every aspect of how we do business.

Investing in renewable energy

Investing in Renewable Energy

We’ve been taking steps to address climate change for more than a decade. We’ve reduced our greenhouse emissions and invested in renewable energy sources such as solar power. Since 2009, for example, we’ve been working with our partners to complete 14 solar electric installations at Intel locations in the U.S. and Israel—collectively generating more than five million kWh per year of clean solar energy.

Conserving water

Conserving Water

We consider efficient and environmentally sound water management throughout all stages of our operations. We’ve invested more than USD 100 million in conservation programs since 1998. This has helped us save more than 40 billion gallons of water over this time period—enough to fill more than 60,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. To learn more about our commitment, read our water policy and our 2011 Corporate Responsibility Report.

Reusing and Recycling

Reusing and Recycling

Each year, we recycle a high percentage of the waste from our operations. This commitment goes back to 1971, and our employees continue to seek out new ways to minimize waste, reuse materials, and recycle everything else.

Our efforts range from large-scale process improvements to the everyday actions of our employees. You can see an example of our commitment in this video of Intel’s resident dumpster diver.

Building facilities

Building Facilities with the Environment in Mind

We apply Design for the Environment (DfE) principles to intelligently address challenges related to energy efficiency, air quality, water management, materials recycling, and more. What’s more, we make it our policy to build every new building to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver level.

Over the past two years, we have also been pursuing certification for a number of existing facilities. As of year-end 2011, we had achieved certification for a total of 18 buildings across five sites, including Arizona, Costa Rica, China, Israel, and Malaysia.
