Network Switching is Having a Light Bulb Moment
As data center workloads increase, the demand on physical and virtual servers is high. Mesh-like Ethernet fabrics and 10 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switches increase network speed and capacity. Ethernet fabric adapters can handle multiple standards including 10 GbE, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). Flatter, cloud-like architectures require more visualization and virtual machine movement with greater server-to-server communication and different traffic flows. Discusses how interlinked pods, racks, containers, or compute blocks provide standardized hosts for virtualized servers and fast fabric-style network connections. This article explains the relationship between the new architectures and high-performance and high-port-count flat networks.
